Absinthe (3'8" x 8'0") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Rug

Deep claret, and running around all four sides of it, a stepped border in a chartreuse so bright it looks lit from within. That colour is the reason this rug stops people. Set against a wine-dark ground and shadowed in forest green and orange, it gives a piece woven decades ago the graphic punch of something made last year.

Down the centre runs a column of four diamonds, each segmented into chartreuse, orange and green, each sprouting fine branching lines above and below like antennae. The lowest is the largest and the most worked, filled with small triangles. On either side the weaver placed rows of crossed symbols — forms carried down through generations of Berber weaving — with small dashes of colour scattered between them.

Nothing here is symmetrical. The border steps at slightly different intervals on each side, the diamonds vary in height, and the flanking symbols shift as they descend. That is what freehand weaving looks like when it is done confidently.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

At 3'8" x 8'0" this is a long, narrow piece — a generous runner, or a room rug for a space where a square format would not fit.

• Beside a bed: Runs the full length of a king or queen with room to stand
• Kitchen: Suits a galley run or the length of an island

Palette notes: Chartreuse on claret is a bold pairing and it does not want competition. Give it white or plaster walls, pale oak, natural linen and a restrained room — it will supply all the colour needed. Against black, brass or dark walnut it turns genuinely striking.
