Natural ivory wool, undyed, with a handful of dark stripes drawn across it — some solid brown-black, some softened to taupe, each one wavering slightly the way a hand-drawn line does. That is the entire design, and it is enough. Set beside the saturated colour and dense pattern of the rugs around it, this reads almost Scandinavian: quiet, linear, modern, and completely at odds with the century it comes from.

It is a flatweave — no pile, woven flat and reversible — so it lies flush to the floor, clears doors a shag rug would jam, and takes a rolling chair without complaint. For a large, calm rug in a working room, there are few things better suited.

One thing to look at closely, because it is part of this particular rug: a soft vertical wash of faded red runs down the centre, irregular and watercolour-like, with a few red strands caught in the fringe. This is not a printed design — it is colour the wool has taken on over decades of use and washing, an organic mark that will never appear the same way twice. On a machine-made rug it would be a flaw. On a piece like this it is simply part of its life, and part of what makes it the only one of its kind.
