Fuchsia, and a great deal of it. Against that pink the weaver stacked diamond after diamond — a mustard yellow one at the top ringed in cream and purple, two mottled brown ones edged in blue, a black one with a cream heart, two red ones below. A band of deep navy cuts across the middle like a horizon line. Nothing is centred, nothing repeats, and the whole thing works.
This is a boucherouite — a rag rug, and the name comes from a Moroccan Arabic phrase meaning a scrap torn from used clothing. When wool was scarce or too costly, weavers made rugs from what they had: offcuts, worn garments, salvaged cloth. Look closely and you can see it. Some sections are dense and soft, others coarser and more open, because the materials changed as the weaver worked. Even the fringe is made of mixed rag strips.
Rugs like this were born of necessity and are now collected as folk art. No dye lot produced this palette and no mill could reproduce it — which is exactly the point.
We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was made by hand in Morocco, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

I saw this rug many months ago and loved the pattern so much! I needed it in a runner size which was not listed as an option.
