Caravan (5'8" x 11'4") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Flatweave Rug

Almost twelve feet of madder red, and running across the whole length, band after band of fine brocaded pattern — diamonds, hooks, stepped forms and bold cartouches in saffron orange, ivory, olive green and black. Some bands sit on their own white ground; others are worked straight into the red. Between them run delicate beaded lines, little dot-dashes that separate one register from the next. Read end to end, it has the rhythm of a journey — which is where the name comes from.

This is a flatweave — a hanbel — and the pattern is brocade, woven into the structure with a supplementary thread and raised just proud of the surface so it catches the light like embroidery. To carry this many different bands, cleanly, across eleven feet without a printed pattern is serious, patient work. It is the classic Moroccan flatweave at its most ambitious.

The length is the rare part. Long flatweaves are hard to find, and a piece at nearly twelve feet suits rooms that most rugs cannot — a long living room, a broad hallway, a run of open-plan space. And being a flatweave, all of it lies flush to the floor: no pile to crush, clears doors, takes a rolling chair, and stays light and simple to keep despite the size.

We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was woven by hand in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.
