Carnival Beni (8'0" x 10'0") – New Handmade Moroccan Wool Rug

Take the most recognisable Moroccan rug in the world — the cream Beni Ourain with its black diamond lattice — and fill it with colour instead of leaving it bare. That is this rug. The bold black diamonds still run down the centre, the traditional bones intact, but the field around them is alive with a dense, painterly scatter of small marks in raspberry, marigold, sky blue, lilac and coral, like a wall of joyful graffiti or an abstract musical score. Traditional structure, contemporary energy.

It rewards looking. From across a room it reads as a bright, confident cream-and-colour rug; up close it dissolves into hundreds of tiny hand-drawn ticks, columns and glyphs, no two the same, with little black ink-drip tassels hanging from the top like punctuation. It has the soul of a Berber rug and the spirit of a modern canvas.

It is newly hand-knotted in 100% wool by the women artisans we work with in Morocco, hand-spun and hand-dyed using our traditional vat-dyeing process. Every colour was mixed and dyed by hand, and every mark drawn freehand at the loom — which is why a design this intricate still feels human rather than manufactured. We would rather make one honest, human piece than a hundred flawless copies.
