A red with something dark moving through it. Look closely and you will find fine charcoal fibres running across the whole surface — in streaks, in flecks, gathering in some places and thinning in others. They give the red a grit and a depth that a clean dye lot never has. From a distance the rug reads as a single deep colour; up close it is far more complicated than that.

The field shifts as well. Deep wine at one end, brightening into cerise across the middle, easing into a dusty rose toward the base. This is abrash, the record of wool dyed in small batches over the months a rug takes to finish. There is no pattern here and no border — the colour is doing all of the work.

The pile is the other half of it: deep, dense and genuinely plush, the kind of shag you notice underfoot before you notice with your eyes. And at the base, unusually, the original fringe survives in a scatter of colours — red, ochre, purple, cream and near-black together, as though the weaver finished the rug with whatever was left.

Plain-field rugs at this scale are uncommon. Most vintage Moroccan pieces fill the ground with symbols; this weaver committed to one colour across nearly ten feet and let the dye and the wool carry it.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Details

  • Rug Number: IC-2463
  • Size: 5'10" x 9'6" (1.78m x 2.90m)
  • Construction: Hand-knotted on a traditional loom in Morocco — no machine work at any stage
  • Style: Vintage Moroccan shag rug, Beni Mguild family — plain saturated field, undecorated
  • Colours: Deep red shifting between wine, crimson and dusty rose, flecked throughout with charcoal
  • Pile: Deep, dense shag
  • Fringe: Original multicoloured fringe at one end
  • Authenticity: A genuine one-of-a-kind vintage piece. The horizontal colour banding is abrash from small-batch hand dyeing, the charcoal flecking is variation in the fleece, and the faint centre line is where the weaver's reach changed at the loom — none of these are faults
  • Availability: One of one. Once this rug sells, it cannot be reordered or reproduced
  • Care: Professionally washed before dispatch and ready to use on arrival

Where it works

At 5'10" x 9'6" this is a proper room-size rug, and a plain field at this scale is unusually useful.

  • Living room: Anchors a full seating group with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug
  • Rooms that already have pattern: Its real strength. Patterned upholstery, a gallery wall, bookshelves — this grounds all of it without adding another voice
  • Bedroom: Best across the foot of a king, or under the lower two thirds of a queen with walkways either side
  • Study or library: Deep pile and quiet colour suit a room meant for sitting still
  • Layering base: Large enough to take a smaller patterned piece on top
  • A note on the pile: This depth of shag is a pleasure underfoot but less suited to rolling desk chairs or dining seating

Palette notes: The charcoal flecking makes this red darker and easier to place than a clean crimson — it sits closer to oxblood than to scarlet. It works with walnut, blackened steel, bone linen, cream plaster and unlacquered brass, and it will hold its own in a room with dark joinery where a brighter red would look strident.

Questions about this piece

This is a single vintage rug, so what you see is what exists — it cannot be remade, resized or reordered. If you would like additional photographs, close detail of the pile or fringe, or a closer look at condition before presenting it to a client, we are happy to send them. Trade enquiries are always welcome.
