Constellation (5'1" x 9'7") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Flatweave Rug

An ivory field, and across the whole of it a lattice of nested diamonds drawn in the finest brown line — rippling outward, folding back, never quite settling. At intervals down the centre the lattice opens into larger medallions holding crossed motifs in magenta and gold, with turquoise lines running out from them like spokes. And everywhere, in the spaces between, hundreds of tiny dots and eight-point stars in pink, gold, teal and green, scattered across the pale ground like a night sky.

This is a flatweave — a hanbel — and it is made quite differently from the knotted rugs beside it. The base is woven flat, and every motif is then worked into that weave with a supplementary thread, line by line. There is no pile to hide behind and no way to correct a mistake. It is the slowest technique in Moroccan weaving and it produces the finest detail.

The practical consequence is significant. Without pile, this rug lies almost flat. It clears doors that a shag rug would jam, it takes a rolling chair without protest, it is lighter to move and simpler to keep clean, and it layers beneath other pieces without lifting them. For a large rug in a working room, that matters.

We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was woven by hand in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

At 5'1" x 9'7" this is a large, long rug — and being a flatweave, it solves problems a pile rug of the same size cannot.

• Long rooms: Its proportions suit a narrow living room, a broad landing or a room where a square rug would look wrong
• Under doors: Lies flush enough to clear internal doors and thresholds that a deep-pile rug would catch
• Home office: Takes a rolling desk chair without resistance — most vintage rugs cannot
• High-traffic routes: A tight flat weave handles footfall better than a long pile, and shows less crushing
• Layering base: Large and flat enough to sit beneath a smaller pile rug without either piece lifting
• Neutral schemes: The ivory ground reads as a light rug from a distance, with the colour only revealing itself close up

Palette notes: An ivory ground with jewel accents is the most adaptable combination in this batch — it lightens a room rather than anchoring it. It works with bone, oatmeal, pale plaster, natural oak, rattan and black metal. In a dark room it lifts the floor considerably.
