A narrow band of tomato scarlet, and set into it two diamonds that work like lanterns. The upper one opens outward in turquoise zigzags, then cream, then a fine navy keyline, closing on a magenta heart that is the brightest point on the whole rug. Below it a second diamond, framed in cobalt, holds a dark navy hourglass with turquoise wedges above and below.
Look at the wide bands running down each side and you can see how this rug was made. They are woven from a mottled, speckled stock — cream shot through with purple, blue and burgundy — completely different from the smooth scarlet of the centre. This is a boucherouite, a rag rug, made from reclaimed cloth rather than a single lot of new yarn. The weaver used what she had, and when the material changed, the rug changed with it.
Even the fringe is rag: long grey strips, still hanging at the base after decades.
We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was made by hand in Morocco, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

I saw this rug many months ago and loved the pattern so much! I needed it in a runner size which was not listed as an option.
