Madder Stars (4'8" x 7'8") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Rug

Two great stepped stars, stacked one above the other on a ground of deep madder red. Each is edged in blush pink and a fine line of slate blue, and each opens into an interior of dark green scrollwork — curling, vegetal, almost calligraphic — closing on a small red cartouche at the centre. At the outer points, a few stitches of amethyst purple appear, then vanish.

Look across the red field and you will see it shift, subtly, in horizontal bands. That is abrash — the mark of wool dyed in small batches, where each new lot came out slightly darker or lighter than the last. A mill would call it a fault. It is the clearest proof you are looking at something dyed and woven by hand.

The border carries rows of small stepped motifs in rose, slate, purple, cream and ochre against charcoal, and the original fringe survives in a scatter of colours — purple, teal, green, ochre, red — which is uncommon on a piece of this age.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Details

  • Rug Number: IC-2447
  • Size: 4'8" x 7'8" (1.42m x 2.34m)
  • Construction: Hand-knotted on a traditional loom in Morocco — no machine work at any stage
  • Style: Vintage Moroccan rug, Boujad family — formal double star medallion with arabesque interiors
  • Colours: Madder red, blush pink, slate blue, dark green, amethyst purple, charcoal, cream, ochre
  • Pile: Medium, finely worked
  • Fringe: Original multicoloured fringe at one end
  • Authenticity: A genuine one-of-a-kind vintage piece. Abrash in the red ground, slight irregularity in the medallions and gentle wear are inherent to a hand-woven rug of this age — they are the evidence it is real
  • Availability: One of one. Once this rug sells, it cannot be reordered or reproduced
  • Care: Professionally washed before dispatch and ready to use on arrival

Where it works

At 4'8" x 7'8" this is a mid-size rug — large enough to anchor a seating area, small enough not to dominate a room.

  • Bedroom: Runs across the foot of a queen or king bed, or sits alongside as a landing spot on waking
  • Living room: Anchors a compact seating group, with the front legs of the sofa and chairs resting on the rug
  • Study or reading corner: Grounds a desk, or a single armchair and floor lamp
  • Entryway or hallway: Wide enough to hold a console and still read as generous underfoot
  • Layering: Works as a focal piece over a larger jute, sisal or plain wool base

Palette notes: The madder red and amethyst sit well against warm plaster walls, cream and oatmeal linens, dark walnut and brass. In a pared-back modern room it does the opposite job — it becomes the only thing you look at.

Questions about this piece

This is a single vintage rug, so what you see is what exists — it cannot be remade, resized or reordered. If you would like additional photographs, detail shots of the weave or fringe, or a closer look at condition before presenting it to a client, we are happy to send them. Trade enquiries are always welcome.
