Marrakech Stripe (6'0" x 8'4") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Flatweave Rug

An ivory ground, and across it band after band of brocaded pattern — dense rows of diamonds, hooked lozenges and small triangles in deep madder red, saffron and olive, each band a different design, separated by fine red zigzag lines and stretches of plain cream. Read top to bottom it has the rhythm of a sampler: every register a new idea, worked by the same hand.

This is a flatweave — a hanbel — and the patterned bands are brocade: motifs woven into the structure with a supplementary thread, raised just proud of the surface so they sit almost like embroidery against the smooth ivory. It is slow, exacting work, and it is the reason the detail here is crisper than on any pile rug. There is no way to hide a mistake on a weave like this.

Of the flatweaves we have, this is the most classically Moroccan — warm ivory and madder red, folkloric geometry, the palette you picture when you picture a Berber textile. And because it is a flatweave, it lies flush to the floor, clears doors, takes a rolling chair and is simple to keep. Traditional to look at, thoroughly practical to live with.
