Nightcap (5'1" x 8'3") – New Handmade Moroccan Wool Rug

Columns of colour rise up a cream ground like bottles lined along a shelf at dusk — segmented forms stacked block on block, some tapering into narrow necks near the top, each shifting colour as it climbs. Slate and denim blue, olive and sage, mustard, mauve, taupe and black, several worked in a soft heathered pile that catches the light. It is the same idea as a bright, playful still-life, but turned down and deepened into something moodier and more grown-up.

That restraint is its appeal. This is an abstract, modern composition with no traditional motif — but where a bright palette shouts, this muted one murmurs. It brings colour and character to a room while staying quiet enough to live with every day, sophisticated rather than cheerful, considered rather than loud.

It is newly hand-knotted in 100% wool by the women artisans we work with in Morocco, hand-spun and hand-dyed using our traditional vat-dyeing process. Every one of those deep, subtle colours was mixed and dyed by hand, and the design drawn freehand at the loom — which is why it reads as considered rather than manufactured. We would rather make one honest, human piece than a hundred flawless copies.
