Nocturne (2'9" x 9'4") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Runner

Stripe after stripe, nine feet of them, in navy and charcoal and cream and every grey between. None of them are the same width. Some are barely a finger across, others four times that; they thicken, thin, wobble slightly off true and occasionally dissolve into the band beside them. Nobody measured anything here.

The palette is almost entirely undyed — cream, oatmeal, dove grey, brown and near-black are the colours fleece already comes in, and this weaver appears to have simply used them as they were. The result is a rug that reads as neutral from any distance, which is a rare thing among vintage Moroccan pieces.

Then, three or four times across its length, something breaks: a turquoise band near the top, a soft green through the middle, and small flashes of red and blue caught at the very edges. You do not see them at first. They are the reason the rug is not dull.

Most of what we sell is colour. This one is not, and that is exactly its use — vintage texture, hand-work and age, without asking a room to commit to anything.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Where it works

At 2'9" x 9'4" this is a long runner in classic corridor proportions — and long runners are considerably harder to find than short ones.

• Hallway: Its purpose. Allow 4–6 inches of floor either side, so a corridor of roughly 3'9" or wider suits it. At over nine feet it will carry a proper passage rather than stopping halfway
• Kitchen: Runs the length of a galley or a full run of cabinetry
• Beside a bed: Longer than a king, so it runs the full side with room to spare
• Long entryway: Leads the eye through without introducing colour to a hall that may open onto several rooms
• Neutral schemes: Its real strength. If a client wants age, texture and hand-work but the scheme is already decided, this is the piece that will not fight it

Palette notes: Essentially a neutral. It sits with almost anything — pale oak and rattan, or smoked oak and blackened steel, or white plaster and bone linen. The navy gives it enough weight to work on a dark floor, and the cream keeps it from disappearing on a pale one.
