Oasis (3'4" x 7'0") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Rug

A field of warm sand, and set into it two diamonds that glow like something found rather than made. The upper one layers red into dark green into black, then opens onto a cobalt triangle above a pale base scattered with small marks. The lower one runs black and pink into coral, closing on a heart of gold and burgundy. Between and around them, small figures and plant forms drift across the tan — a yellow leaf here, a coral sprig there, and near the right edge what looks unmistakably like a small standing figure with its arms out.

Holding it all is a slate-blue border built as a grid: teal motifs alternating with burgundy squares, each one holding a small cream or yellow centre. It is more structured than the field it frames, and the contrast between the two is the reason this rug works.

Most vintage Moroccan rugs commit to a strong ground colour. This one does not — the tan is close to undyed, which makes the colour that is here land far harder, and makes the rug considerably easier to live with in a room that already has a scheme.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

At 3'4" x 7'0" this is a long, narrow piece — and the neutral ground makes it unusually flexible for a vintage rug.

• Neutral schemes: The tan field sits with oatmeal, bone, greige and natural wood in a way a red or blue ground simply will not. If a client wants character without committing the room to a colour, this is the piece
• Hallway: Needs a corridor of roughly 4'4" or wider to leave floor showing either side
• Beside a bed: Runs the length of a queen with room to stand
• Narrow study or dressing room: Wide enough to read as the room's rug

Palette notes: Tan with slate blue and jewel accents is the most versatile combination in this batch. It works with linen, bone, pale plaster, rattan and light oak, and the blue border gives it enough coolness to sit in a room that is not otherwise warm-toned.
