This rug was red once. Decades of light and use have taken it somewhere better — a soft faded terracotta that lightens to salmon in places and holds a deeper brick in others, never quite settling on one tone. Against it the weaver set diamonds in apricot and sage green, outlined in a brown so dark it reads as black, arranged in registers that run the length of the field.

Two large diamonds at the top, two more at the base, and between them bands of smaller work — lozenges, crossed forms, small branching figures, a row of tiny crosses scattered like punctuation. A zigzag band closes the top, chains of linked diamonds run down both sides, and a sawtooth finishes the base.

It is worth being clear about what the fading is. This is not damage and not a defect — it is the quality collectors look for and pay more for. A vintage rug that has softened is easier to live with than one that has not: the colours have stopped competing, the contrast has settled, and the whole surface has a depth that no finishing process can imitate. New rugs are made to look like this. This one simply is.

The earth palette helps too. Terracotta, apricot, sage and olive sit comfortably in almost any contemporary scheme, where a sharper red would need managing.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Details

  • Rug Number: IC-2465
  • Size: 4'4" x 8'0" (1.32m x 2.44m)
  • Construction: Hand-knotted on a traditional loom in Morocco — no machine work at any stage
  • Style: Vintage Moroccan rug, Middle Atlas / Boujad family — compartmented registers with tribal diamond motifs
  • Colours: Faded terracotta ground with apricot, sage green, olive and near-black
  • Pile: Medium, softened with age
  • Fringe: Original multicoloured fringe at one end
  • Condition note: The fading and gentle surface wear are the character of an older rug that has been used and lived with. They are not damage
  • Authenticity: A genuine one-of-a-kind vintage piece. Abrash through the ground, variation between the diamonds and softened pile are inherent to a hand-woven rug of this age — they are the evidence it is real
  • Availability: One of one. Once this rug sells, it cannot be reordered or reproduced
  • Care: Professionally washed before dispatch and ready to use on arrival

Where it works

At 4'4" x 8'0" this is a long mid-size rug, and the muted palette makes it one of the easiest pieces in the collection to specify.

  • Bedroom: Runs across the foot of a king, or alongside a queen with room to stand
  • Living room: Anchors a compact seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on the rug
  • Long or narrow rooms: The proportions suit a space where a squarer rug would sit awkwardly
  • Wide hallway: Broad enough to hold a console and read as generous
  • Schemes already decided: Faded earth tones are the least demanding colours a vintage rug can bring. This will settle into a room rather than reorganise it

Palette notes: Terracotta with sage and apricot is one of the most current combinations in interiors, and here it arrives already softened. It sits with lime plaster, unglazed clay, oak, cane, bone linen and aged brass. Against cool greys it will warm the room without shouting.

Questions about this piece

This is a single vintage rug, so what you see is what exists — it cannot be remade, resized or reordered. If you would like additional photographs, detail shots of the weave or a closer look at the surface wear before presenting it to a client, we are happy to send them. Trade enquiries are always welcome.
