Saffron Lattice (3'6" x 8'10") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Runner

$700.00

Nearly nine feet of red, divided into a lattice of small compartments, each one holding a single diamond — ivory, then saffron, then ivory again, all the way down. Around them the weaver has packed small florets and stars until barely any ground is left showing. It is dense, disciplined work, and it held its rhythm across the entire length of the loom.

The remarkable thing is what the red does. It begins at one end in a dusty rose, deepens into strong crimson, holds through the middle, then eases into rust and finally a warm sand at the far end. This is abrash — the record of a weaver dyeing wool in small batches over the months it took to finish, each new lot slightly different from the last. On a rug this long the effect is unmistakable. It is not fading, and it is not a flaw: it is the reason a hand-dyed rug looks alive where a machine-made one looks printed.

At 3'6" wide it is broader than a standard runner, which makes it more forgiving in a generous hallway and useful in places a narrow runner would look mean.

We buy rugs like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made piece than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was hand-knotted in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Details

  • Rug Number: IC-2451
  • Size: 3'6" x 8'10" (1.07m x 2.69m)
  • Construction: Hand-knotted on a traditional loom in Morocco — no machine work at any stage

  • Colours: Faded red shifting from rose to crimson to rust, saffron gold, ivory, charcoal
  • Pile: Medium
  • Authenticity: A genuine one-of-a-kind vintage piece. The pronounced abrash through the red ground, slight irregularity in the lattice and gentle wear are inherent to a hand-woven rug of this age — they are the evidence it is real

  • Care: Professionally washed before dispatch and ready to use on arrival

Where it works

At 3'6" x 8'10" this is a wide runner — long enough for a proper corridor, broad enough not to look like an afterthought.

  • Hallway: Its natural home. Allow 4–6 inches of floor either side, so a corridor of roughly 4'6" or wider suits it best
  • Beside a bed: Runs the full length of a king or queen, with room to stand on
  • Kitchen: Works along a galley or in front of a run of cabinetry
  • Foot of the bed: Laid across, it spans a king comfortably
  • Narrow rooms: Broad enough to read as a room rug in a small study or dressing room

More on placing long, narrow pieces in our guide to runners.

Palette notes: Saffron and ivory on a red that shifts as it travels — this sits naturally with terracotta tile, lime plaster, aged oak and brass. Against cool greys it will fight; against warm neutrals it will glow.

Questions about this piece

This is a single vintage rug, so what you see is what exists — it cannot be remade, resized or reordered.
