Band after band, the full width of the rug and nearly twelve feet of it — crimson, then coral, then a chocolate so dark it reads as black, then a dusty mauve-grey, then burgundy. Between them the weaver set brocaded bands: ivory grounds worked over with zigzag lattice in dark red and charcoal, with tiny points of green appearing and disappearing along the way.

The palette is what lifts this piece. Most striped flatweaves shout. This one has been softened — by dye choice, by age, or both — into something dusty and muted, with a mauve-grey running through it that you rarely see in Moroccan weaving. It reads sophisticated rather than folkloric, which is not a common thing to say about a rug of this kind.

The weave itself is worth noticing. A flatweave carries no pile to soften what it is doing, so every band is exactly as wide as the weaver made it — and the brocaded sections, where the pattern is worked into the structure rather than laid on top of it, are the slowest part of the whole process. There is no room to correct anything on a rug built this way.

Being a flatweave, it lies almost flush. There is no pile to crush, it slips under doors that would stop a shag rug, and at this size that matters — a twelve-foot pile rug is a serious object to move, while this one is not.

We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was woven by hand in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.

Details

  • Rug Number: IC-2461
  • Size: 5'8" x 11'6" (1.73m x 3.51m)
  • Construction: Handwoven flatweave with supplementary-weft brocading, made in Morocco — no machine work at any stage
  • Style: Vintage Moroccan flatweave (hanbel), banded stripe with brocaded registers
  • Colours: Crimson, coral, dusty mauve-grey, chocolate black, burgundy, ivory, with green and teal accents
  • Pile: None — flatwoven, lies almost flush to the floor
  • Fringe: Original cream fringe at one end
  • Authenticity: A genuine one-of-a-kind vintage piece. Drift in the stripe depths, variation in the brocaded bands and gentle wear are inherent to handweaving — they are the evidence it is real

Where it works

At 5'8" x 11'6" this is a large rug with long-room proportions, and stripes are the most forgiving pattern there is to specify.

  • Long living rooms: Its natural home. Carries a full seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on the rug
  • Rooms with existing pattern: A stripe sits alongside almost anything — florals, geometrics, plain upholstery. It is the least demanding pattern in a scheme
  • Open-plan zoning: Long enough to define a seating area within a larger space
  • Large bedroom: Best across the foot of a king, or floated in a generous room — at 5'8" wide a king will overhang it
  • Gallery landing or wide hall: Substantial enough to carry a long corridor
  • Under doors and in traffic: No pile to catch or crush, and simpler to lift and clean than a rug this size would normally be

Palette notes: The dusty mauve-grey is the key. It cools the reds enough that this works in a room that is not warm-toned — alongside grey plaster, smoked oak, blackened steel and bone linen, as readily as with terracotta and brass.

Questions about this piece

This is a single vintage rug, so what you see is what exists — it cannot be remade, resized or reordered.
