Sultan (6'8" x 9'8") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Rug

Some rugs are quiet. This one is not, and it does not want to be. A deep madder-red field is divided into a lattice of large diamonds, and then every diamond — and every scrap of ground between them — is filled, completely, with fine tribal detail: small hooks, crosses, stars, diamonds and flecks in ivory, saffron, aubergine and black. The eye never finds a plain patch to rest on. The density of the work is the whole point, and it is extraordinary.

Down the centre, larger stepped medallions rise out of the pattern, each closing on a small hooked heart. A strong multi-band border frames the field on all four sides — the outer row a grid of little compartmented Berber crosses, the inner bands zigzag and diamond work. Nothing about this rug was rushed.

At 6'8" by 9'8" it is the largest and most substantial piece in this collection, and finely enough knotted to hold detail this small across that much ground. This is the kind of rug a room is built around, not one added at the end — a genuine showpiece, hand-woven by someone at the height of their craft.
