Tidepool (2'11" x 5'9") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Rag Rug

Three blocks of colour, stacked one on the next — cream-white at the top, bright turquoise through the middle, deep indigo at the base — and set into each one a single diamond that seems to float on it. The top diamond is turquoise ringed in red; the middle red and purple; the bottom red closing on a pale ice-blue heart. Read top to bottom, the rug moves from light into deep water.

Down each side the weaver did something else entirely: loose black-and-cream lines waver from top to bottom, threaded with flashes of lavender pink, drawn freehand and completely unlike the ordered diamonds in the centre. The two halves of this rug seem to come from two different moods, held together in one piece.

This is a boucherouite, a rag rug, and the shag is deep and chunky — you can pick out the individual strands of reclaimed cloth in the pile. When wool was scarce, weavers made rugs from what the household had worn out, which is why the palette here could never be planned and never be repeated.

We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was made by hand in Morocco, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.
