Wildflower (4'10" x 8'0") – Authentic Vintage Moroccan Flatweave Rug

A field of soft watermelon pink, faded gently with age, and scattered across it rows of eight-point stars — ivory and cream, each one holding a small heart of olive green and rose. Between the star rows run lines of little crossed marks, quieter, in the same soft palette. The rhythm is regular but never mechanical: the stars change size as they go, the spacing wanders, and no two are worked in quite the same colours.

This is a flatweave — a hanbel — but not a plain one. The ground is woven flat, and then every star and cross is brocaded into it with a supplementary thread, raised slightly proud of the surface so the motifs catch the light and sit almost like embroidery. It is slow, careful work, and it produces a rug far more delicate than a knotted pile piece.

What stands out most is the mood. Almost everything else from this weaving tradition is bold — saturated reds, strong geometry, high contrast. This is gentle. Rose, cream and sage, soft-edged and pretty, it is the rare vintage Moroccan rug that reads as tender rather than striking.

We buy pieces like this because we would rather sell one honest, irregular, human-made rug than a hundred flawless machine copies. It was woven by hand in Morocco decades ago, it has already lived a life, and there is not another one anywhere.
