The 4 Pillars of a Custom Moroccan Rug: Why True Luxury Cannot Be Mechanized
Illuminate Collective brings handmade, designer rugs to a global market while maximizing community impact, empowering talented artisans, and upholding the historic integrity of the Moroccan weaving tradition. We believe a business should be not-just-for-profit and transform the lives of the communities they work in. For us, that means upholding the artisanal values we hold near to our hearts—women’s empowerment, prioritizing an ethical working environment, maintaining a responsible supply chain, and creating a space to preserve traditional weaving expressions.
Born from a passion for art, design, and textiles cultivated after years of world travel and work in the antique rug business, our process results in beautiful, heirloom rugs made with a whole lot of passion and a whole lot of love. If you are looking for the right piece for your living space, don’t forget to check out our new handcrafted products! Our new rugs are uniquely Hand-Designed with Hand-Picked and Hand-Dyed Wool and are Hand-Woven by some of the most skilled weavers in Morocco. Take a look at the steps it takes to create all of our new products.
1. Hand-Designed
We believe that variety is a beautiful thing. While trusting and empowering our weavers to create the rugs by hand following a design can create a lack of uniformity, we believe that the true beauty of Moroccan rugs lies in the hands of the weavers, not in machines. Perfection is found in the unique, not the standard.
2. Hand-Picked Wool
We hand select all of the wool used in the weaving process. The foundation of our rugs is made completely from wool sourced from the markets of Morocco and skillfully spun by hand. Our weavers have mastered this labor-intensive process to ensure that only the best materials are used to create our rugs.
Using our unique wool foundation ensures that our rugs maintain a luxuriously soft and plush feel as opposed to the stiff, machine-manufactured alternative. You will be amazed by the feel of our thick, plush rugs - they are soft enough to sleep on!
3. Hand-Dyed Wool
One of the things that fueled our love for Moroccan rugs was the colors. As a result of our infatuation with rich colors, we remain committed to hand-dying our own wool. This process ensures that all of our rugs represent the vibrance and fullness of the Moroccan tradition.
In our shop, we use a process called “Vat Dying”. This technique uses stainless-steel pots instead of copper, a consistently controlled temperature, and the best dyes available in the industry. Because of this intricate process, we are able to develop both deep rich colors and soft beautiful pastels. This unique blend of colors allows us to offer a wide array of options and provide a full line of products.
4. Hand-Woven
By maintaining our dedication to the hand-crafted tradition of Morocco, we welcome variety. While machines produce consistently perfect rugs, we know that the beauty of this art cannot be mechanized. As a result of our trust in our weavers, we admit that all of our rugs may not be perfectly straight or identical to the design. However, the result is a product with unique craftsmanship and unparalleled beauty. We will always trade flawless imitation for unique artisanship.
