Art of Vat-Dyeing: How We Achieve Perfect Hues for Your Custom Rug
Illuminate Collective was born from a passion for art, design, and textiles, cultivated after years of world travel and work in the antique rug business. While the intricate geometric and abstract patterns of Moroccan weaving are globally renowned, one of the things that truly fueled our love for these heirloom pieces was the vibrant, breathtaking colors.
For interior designers and homeowners alike, finding the exact hue to anchor a room is essential. Today, we are taking you behind the scenes to explore how our commitment to hand-dying our own wool ensures that all of our custom rugs represent the vibrance and fullness of the Moroccan tradition.
1. The Blank Canvas: Hand-Picked Wool
Every masterpiece starts with a flawless foundation. Before a single drop of color is introduced, we hand select all of the wool used in the weaving process. Sourced directly from the markets of Morocco and skillfully spun by hand, this pure, unbleached wool acts as the perfect natural canvas, ready to absorb and hold onto our rich dyes for generations to come.
2. The Science of Vat-Dyeing
To achieve the exact specifications required by our design partners, we utilize a highly controlled process called "Vat-Dyeing." This traditional technique has been refined in our shop to guarantee the best results possible.
We specifically use stainless-steel pots instead of traditional copper. Copper can react unpredictably with certain pigments, altering the final shade. By combining stainless steel with a consistently controlled temperature and the best dyes available in the industry, we are able to develop both deep, rich jewel tones and soft, beautiful pastels.
3. Sun-Dried Vibrance
Once the vat-dyeing process is complete, the wool is hung to dry naturally in the Moroccan sun. This unique blend of colors allows us to offer a wide array of options and provide a full line of completely customizable products. Because our rugs are custom-made by hand using this hand-dyed wool, the handcrafted process may result in slight color variations (known as abrash) and design differences, making every single rug a truly unique, one-of-a-kind artisanal work.
Designer Sizing Notes
When customizing a piece for your home, please remember that our traditional rugs feature a fringe and apron measuring up to 6” on each side. This means the total length of the rug is typically up to 12” longer than the listed size, as dimensions reflect only the piled portion. We are always happy to accommodate your preferences, such as no fringe, bound ends, or small customizations to color and specific dimensions.
